Angela Roy
Co-Owner
Angela Roy has spent her life helping things grow - whether caring for newborn babies, raising a family, or helping build Piopio Berry Orchard alongside Mike.
Raised on a farm near Whangārei as one of ten children, Angela learned early the values of resilience, hard work, and caring for others. At 17, she left home to pursue nursing and went on to build a successful career as a midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse in New Zealand and Australia.
Her life changed when she returned home for her sister's wedding and met the best man, Mike Roy. While Angela was building her future in healthcare, Mike was building his in horticulture. Together they chose a different path - one that combined family life, orchard life, and a shared belief in creating something of their own.
The years that followed demanded extraordinary commitment. Angela balanced nursing, motherhood, and the growing business, often moving between hospital shifts, family responsibilities, and orchard work. Like many young families starting out, there were long days, sleepless nights, and plenty of uncertainty. What kept her going was the belief that they were building a future for their children and creating a life centered around family.
Along the way, Angela became a driving force behind many of the decisions that shaped the orchard's future. Where Mike's passion is the fruit itself, Angela's strength lies in people, planning, and creating memorable experiences for customers. Her ability to combine compassion with practical business thinking has helped transform the orchard into a place families return to year after year.
Today, one of Angela's greatest joys is seeing the next generation become part of the story. With daughters Jessie and Maggie now helping shape the business and five grandchildren growing up among the berry rows, she takes immense pride in seeing the values that guided those early years continue into the future.
Mike Roy
Co-Owner
Mike Roy's story is grounded in hard work, a love of growing fruit, and a deep commitment to family.
Raised in Whanganui, Mike studied horticulture at Massey University before spending his early career working in orchards across the North Island. Summers were spent among fruit trees, while winters often found him working on the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu. Those years gave him a broad knowledge of horticulture and a strong appreciation for the rewards that come from dedication and perseverance.
After travelling through Europe, Mike returned home and attended a friend's wedding, where he met Angela Fahey, the bride's sister. What began as a chance meeting soon became a shared vision for a life together in New Zealand. They married in 1987 and set about building both a family and a business.
For Mike, the orchard was always about more than growing fruit. He and Angela worked tirelessly to create opportunities for their children and build something that could support their family for generations to come. Many of the sacrifices and risks they took over the years were driven by that goal.
Over the decades, Mike has remained focused on the growing side of Piopio Berry Orchard. His passion lies in producing exceptional fruit, continually refining varieties, growing methods, and harvest techniques to achieve the best possible flavour and quality. Many of the orchard's innovations have been driven by his belief that there is always a better way to grow.
Today, Mike still enjoys nothing more than being out among the berry plants, planning for the seasons ahead. But his proudest achievement isn't measured in tonnes of fruit. It's seeing the orchard remain a place where family comes together - with daughters Jessie and Maggie now playing important roles in the business and a new generation of grandchildren already developing the same love of the land that has shaped their family's story.
Jessie Loomans
Shop Manager
As the eldest daughter of Mike and Angela Roy, Jessie has grown up alongside Piopio Berry Orchard - quite literally. Her childhood was spent among the berry rows, helping in the shop, and being part of the daily rhythm of a family business built on hard work and community.
After finishing school, Jessie worked in Early Childhood Education in Otorohanga and Piopio, where her natural warmth, patience, and ability to connect with people quickly became evident - qualities that continue to define her today.
In 2010, Jessie married Hamish Loomans. Together they have four sons - James, Fletcher, Charlie, and Sam - and have chosen to raise their family in Piopio, close to the same community Jessie grew up in.
Today, Jessie manages the orchard shop and leads the front-of-house team. She oversees the customer experience, supports staff during busy seasons, and has helped refine the flow, presentation, and day-to-day running of the shop.
Often the first friendly face customers see, Jessie carries forward the welcoming atmosphere the orchard is known for, blending family tradition with her own thoughtful approach to service.
For Jessie, the orchard is both home and heritage - a place where her own children are now growing up surrounded by the same values and community that shaped her.
Maggie Roy Evans
Finance & Operations
As the youngest of Mike and Angela’s four children, Maggie grew up immersed in the rhythm of orchard life - busy harvest seasons, shop work, and a family business built on resilience and hard work.
After university, she began her accounting career with a firm in Otorohanga, quickly building strong experience in financial systems and business operations. It was during this time she met Rhys Evans, and the couple married in 2021.
Following their wedding, Maggie and Rhys moved to Sydney for work opportunities before later relocating to London. While continuing her accounting career overseas, Maggie remained closely involved in the family business, managing the orchard’s accounts and administration remotely across different time zones.
In 2024, they welcomed their daughter, Tilly - the first of the next generation growing up across two hemispheres. After maternity leave, Maggie made the decision to step away from her external accounting role and focus fully on supporting Piopio Berry Orchard.
Today, she manages the orchard’s finance and operations, including payroll, reporting, forecasting, and administration, while also overseeing the orchard’s social media and online presence. From abroad, she provides the structure and visibility that help keep the business running smoothly and connected to its customers.
Maggie represents the next evolution of the orchard - combining professional expertise with a lifelong connection to the family business, and helping carry it forward into its next chapter.
