Mike Roy
Co-Owner
Mike Roy’s story is grounded in hard work, bold decisions, and a lifelong love of growing exceptional fruit.
Mike grew up in Whanganui and after studying horticulture at Massey University, Mike spent his early twenties immersed in orchards across the North Island, learning different crops and refining his craft. His seasons were a contrast - summers among fruit trees and winters working the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu. Even then, Mike thrived on challenge and change.
Following travels through Europe, fate intervened at a wedding. Mike’s friend was getting married - and there he met Angela Fahey, the bride’s sister. What began as a chance meeting quickly became something much deeper. Angela was building a promising nursing career in Australia, specialising in neonatal intensive care. But Mike wasn’t ready to let her return across the Tasman so easily.
He made a compelling case for her to complete her studies in New Zealand instead. And in true Kiwi fashion, he proposed over fish and chips. It wasn’t extravagant - it was heartfelt, sincere, and entirely Mike. Angela said yes.
The couple married in 1987 and purchased their first orchard south of Hamilton. They sold strawberries, fruit and vegetables from the markets, and exported apples - all while welcoming their first three children: Jessie, Jack and Tom. Those early years demanded extraordinary commitment. Angela was still working as a midwife, often doing night shifts at the hospital before heading straight to orchard work the next day. Sleep was scarce, but belief in what they were building never wavered.
When they later purchased the Piopio orchard in 1993 - then a fruit and vegetable shop newly experimenting with blueberries - life became even busier.
For several years they ran both orchards simultaneously. Mike would leave before dawn to work the Hamilton markets and orchard, returning late at night. Angela managed the Piopio shop, cared for three young children, and continued juggling motherhood with long hours. As they often say, they were “two passing ships in the night.”
Eventually, recognising the long-term potential of Piopio, they sold the Hamilton orchard and focused fully on building something special there. Their fourth child, Maggie, arrived in 1995 - growing up alongside the orchard itself.
Mike’s passion has always been in perfecting the fruit. Over decades, he refined growing systems, varieties, and harvest techniques to produce the beautiful berries customers see in the shop today. His standards are uncompromising - flavour, size, and quality come first.
But as Mike himself says: “There is no use having an amazing product if you cannot sell it.” That’s where Angela comes in.
In 2005, together they made one of their boldest decisions - to focus solely on berries. It meant closing for half the year and walking away from the security of year-round trade. It was a significant risk. Mike trusted the product; Angela believed in the business strategy. With careful planning and conviction, they made the leap.
Two years later, they expanded again with Berrycool - real fruit ice creams, smoothies, and coffee - transforming the orchard into an experience, not just a shop.
In 2019, Mike and Angela introduced the first strawberry tunnel house at Piopio Berry Orchard - a major step in modernising production. Since then, they’ve steadily added more tunnel houses each year, allowing the orchard to meet growing demand while extending the berry season, and giving customers fresher fruit for longer.
And now, in a full-circle moment, they have just planted 500 apple trees - returning to Mike’s original love. It’s a quiet nod to where his journey began, woven into everything they’ve built since.
Today, Mike’s journey reflects resilience, innovation, and the courage to back both the land and the partnership beside him. His fruit may be the hero - but it is the shared vision that made Piopio Berry Orchard what it is today.
Now, their greatest joy is seeing the orchard through the eyes of their four grandsons and one granddaughter, who are already growing up with berry-stained fingers and the same love of the land that has shaped their family’s story.
Angela Roy
Co-Owner
Angela Roy is the heart, strategy, and steady strength behind Piopio Berry Orchard.
Raised as one of ten children on a farm near Whangārei, Angela learned early the values of resilience, teamwork, and caring for others. At 17, she left school to pursue nursing - a calling that would see her become a respected midwife and neonatal intensive care nurse across New Zealand and Australia.
Her career took her to Melbourne and the Northern Territory, where she gained extensive experience and furthered her NICU training. She was building a strong professional future - until a trip home for her sister’s wedding changed everything.
The best man was Mike Roy.
What began as a connection quickly became something deeper. Mike encouraged Angela to complete her NICU training in New Zealand. His persistence, sincerity, and shared vision for a life on the land won her over. She chose not only the man, but the future they could build together in New Zealand.
They married in 1987 and stepped into orchard life side by side.
The early years of marriage were relentless. Angela continued working at the hospita;, often doing night shifts before spending her days in the orchard or shop. She balanced newborns in hospital wards with raising her own young children at home - all while helping establish a growing business. It was a season of sacrifice, stamina, and shared belief.
While Mike focused on growing and production, Angela naturally stepped into the business engine room. During the demanding years of running two orchards, she worked the fields, managed the Piopio shop, served customers, balanced accounts, ordered stock, and raised four young children.
Angela possesses a rare balance - deep compassion paired with sharp commercial instinct. Where Mike sees the potential in the soil, Angela sees the pathway to market. She understands people, presentation, and positioning. It was often Angela who helped weigh the financial realities and encouraged the calculated risks that shaped the orchard’s future.
The 2005 decision to focus solely on berries was not just a horticultural shift - it was a business transformation. Moving from year-round trade to a six-month seasonal model required courage and clarity. Angela’s strategic thinking and belief in brand identity helped guide that change successfully.
When Berrycool was launched two years later, it was Angela’s understanding of customer experience that helped turn it into a destination. Real fruit ice creams, coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere transformed a rural orchard into a place families return to year after year.
In 2019, Mike and Angela introduced their first strawberry tunnel house, a major step in modernising the orchard. Together, they have steadily added more each year, extending the berry season, meeting growing demand, and keeping the focus on quality fruit and a great customer experience.
At her core, Angela is both caregiver and entrepreneur. She has spent her life nurturing growth - in hospital wards, within her family, across the berry rows of Piopio, and now best of all, with her five grandchildren.
Mike may have perfected the fruit, but Angela ensured the world would come to taste it.
Jessie Loomans
Shop Manager
As the eldest daughter of Mike and Angela Roy, Jessie has grown up alongside Piopio Berry Orchard - quite literally.
Her childhood memories are woven through the rows of berry bushes, summer harvests, busy shop counters, and the hum of family life built around hard work and community. Piopio isn’t just where Jessie was raised - it shaped who she is.
After finishing school, Jessie followed a path grounded in care and connection, working in Early Childhood Education in both Otorohanga and Piopio. Supporting young children in their earliest years came naturally to her. Much like her mum, she carries a quiet strength, warmth, and steady patience - qualities that define both her professional life and her role within the orchard today.
In 2010, Jessie married Hamish Loomans. Hamish grew up in Matamata before building his own career in agriculture, and today he manages a dairy farm in Aria. Together, they have welcomed four energetic boys, James, Fletcher, Charlie, and Sam, who are now growing up in the very same community that raised Jessie.
When it came time to decide where to settle and raise their family, Jessie felt strongly about coming home. She believed deeply in the values of small-town life - strong community ties, open spaces, and local schools that know your name. She convinced Hamish that Piopio was where their boys should grow up and attend the same local schools she once did. For Jessie, it wasn’t just about location - it was about belonging.
Today, Jessie manages the orchard shop, bringing both her early childhood experience and lifelong connection to the orchard into her role. She understands families because she is raising one. She understands the rhythm of the orchard because she was raised in it.
Over the years, Jessie has thoughtfully refined the entire shop experience, from presentation and layout to workflow and customer service, while also leading and supporting the shop team. She works closely with staff to ensure the space runs smoothly during busy seasons, creating an environment that is efficient and welcoming for every customer who walks through the door.
Customers are often greeted by Jessie’s familiar smile and calm presence - whether they’re popping in for fresh berries, real fruit ice creams, or simply a catch-up. She carries forward the welcoming environment her parents established, blending tradition with the next generation’s perspective.
For Jessie, Piopio Berry Orchard isn’t just a business. It’s heritage, home, and the place where her own children are now building memories among the berry rows - just as she once did.
Maggie Roy Evans
Finance & Operations
As the youngest of Mike and Angela’s four children, Maggie has always known life intertwined with orchard rows, busy harvest seasons, and family at the centre of everything.
Growing up in Piopio, she witnessed first hand the resilience and risk-taking that built the business. Having been raised in the shop and fields, Maggie developed a love for numbers and structure - perhaps the perfect complement to an entrepreneurial family. After university, she began her accounting career with a local firm in Otorohanga, where she quickly built experience and confidence.
It was during this time she met Rhys Evans. They married in October 2021 - on the orchard itself. It was meant to be a celebration with 120 guests, but pandemic restrictions turned it into a "Covid wedding,” with just ten in attendance. Intimate and heartfelt, it was unmistakably personal and perfectly fitting.
Shortly after their wedding, an exciting opportunity arose for Rhys to work in Reinsurance in Sydney. In 2021, they packed up and moved to Australia - a big step and a new adventure. Maggie continued her accounting career in Sydney, embracing city life while staying closely connected to home.
In early 2023, another opportunity saw them relocate again - this time to London - with Maggie transferring to her firm’s London office. Although it was Rhys who first convinced her to take the leap overseas, Maggie could never quite step away from the family business. No matter the time zone, she continued managing the orchard’s bookwork - ensuring invoices were paid, accounts balanced, and the behind-the-scenes structure remained strong.
In 2024, they welcomed their daughter, Tilly - the first of the next generation to call two hemispheres home. After maternity leave, Maggie made a defining decision. Rather than returning to her accounting role in London, she chose to commit fully to Piopio Berry Orchard - even from afar.
Today, Maggie manages all the financials and administration that keep the business running smoothly. From payroll to forecasting, compliance to planning. From overseas she oversees the operational backbone of the orchard. Though she may be thousands of kilometres away, her influence is constant and steady.
Each year, Maggie looks forward to returning to New Zealand during the berry season - trading London’s winter chill for long summer evenings, family dinners, and the familiar hum of the orchard at its busiest. For her, it is both reconnection and reminder: no matter where life takes her, Piopio will always be home.
Maggie represents the next evolution of the orchard - grounded in family, strengthened by professional expertise, and proving that even from the other side of the world, you can remain deeply rooted.
